Nails are formed in the nail matrix the root of the nail. White spots can sometimes appear on the nail. White nails may be all white or partially white depending on the cause. A single fingernail that turns white may indicate an issue with that specific finger.

White bands go across the entire nail from side to side. A white fingernail can indicate a number of different medical issues. If the nails are mostly white with darker rims this can indicate liver problems such as hepatitis. This common problem can happen because of an issue with your diet or the chemicals your hands are exposed to.

Both finger and toenails are usually pale pink in color with a lighter crescent shape at the bottom of the nail known as the lunula. Lines are usually most clearly seen on the second third and fourth fingers. If all of the nails are white or partially whitened it usually means that a systemic problem is occurring. This is a very common issue and entirely harmless.
